- Jag mötte dem senare i livet och de hjälpte mig när vi spelade tillsammans att bli tillräckligt modig för att våga "rock a round with my saxophone" bland publiken, säger Big Walker till Ulla Forsberg i en intervju i Jefferson # 126 (2000). De som hjälpte honom var Dr Wild Bill Moore och Albert Collins.

Amerikan, som sedan början av 80-talet är bosatt i Sverige, som skriver texter och musik, sjunger, spelar munspel och saxofon. I Sverige och Skandinavien har han turnerat med eget band och tillsammans med andra artister. Undervisar och förmedlar sina färdigheter till andra gör han på Stockholms Musikkonservatorium/Rytmus i ensemble och munspel samt på Kulturama, Stockholm, som lärare och handledare i bluessång och munspel. Hans musik är mycket bra med utmärkt mun- och saxofonspel. 

Född i Lawton, Oklahoma, och uppväxt i Cleveland, Ohio, i en artist- och musikerfamilj. Musiken i San Fransisco, dit han flyttade under mitten av sextio-talet, präglade honom. Jimi Hendrix, Greatful Dead, Cream, The Jefferson Airplane var några musiker/grupper som den då tonårige Derrick Walker fick höra och se.

Noel Juke och Bobby Forte undervisade honom i saxofon. Lektioner i munspel, förutom de tidiga boogie-woogie instruktionerna av sin morbror John Wooden, fick han av Paul Butterfield.

Åren efter skolan turnerade och spelade han med bland annat The Luther Tucker Band, Albert Collins, Percy Mayfield, Big Mama Thornton och Jimmy McCracklin.

Kombinationen sång, munspel och saxofon har förekommit tidigare. Att spela munspel och sax har sina fördelar, enligt Derrick. Det utvecklar ett annat, mer varierat, spelsätt. Fler yngre saxofonister skulle kanske prova på?

Inom den närmsta framtiden skall Derreck, förutom att ta hand om sin lille son Sid, bege sig till Storbrittanien för att turnera med Kevin Thorp Blues Band. Detta sker i mars 2003.

An American, who since the beginning of the 80´s is living in Sweden. He writes music and lyrics, sings, plays the harmonica and the saxophone. In Sweden and Scandinavia he has toured with his own band and together with various artists. He is teaching and sharing his skills with others at Stockholms Music Conservatory/Rytmus in ensemble and harmonica. At Kulturama High School for Music and Dramatic Arts in Stockholm he is also teaching and instructing in bluessong and harmonica. His music is very good as well as his harmonica- and saxophoneplaying.

The combination vocals, harmonica and saxophone is not new in Blues and R&B music. To play harmonica and saxophone has it´s advantages, according to Derreck. It developes a different, more variated, way to play. Maybe this can be something for young saxplayers to try?

In the near future Derreck, besides taking care of his little son Sid, is going to tour in U.K. with Kevin Thorp Blues Band. This will take place in March 2003.
