The major solo instrument in Rhythm & Blues is the saxophone. Its sound is the voice of R&B and the short, heavily structured sax-solos of R&B-songs that crossed over into Rock and Roll, and the sax riffs that built these songs are forever engraved in the hearts and souls of a generation. The encounter with wild, extroverted and totally uninhibited sax players in the early '50s predates but had a "Presleylike-effect" on white youngsters. The series features the saxmaniacs (Big JayMcNeely, Red Prysock), the sax-playing vocalists (Bullmoose and Cleanhead) as well as the sax-balladeers (Tab Smith and Lynn Hope). |

ROUTE 66 |
The ROUTE 66 label was formed in early 1976. At that time no other reissue label of black music was dedicated to Rhythm & Blues of the '40s and '50s, and only a handful of LPs in this field saw the light of day each year. The motto expressed on the sleeves was: "ROUTE 66 RECORDS reissues forgotten but essential recordings of Rhythm & Blues. It was the most popular Afro-American music for dance and entertainment after World War II and the equivalent to pre-war jazz and blues. Route 66 also actively supports the originators of this art." ROUTE 66 was an immediate success with critics and public alike. |
